The ministry of deacon, as set forth in Scripture, "Is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress."
I am a deacon and perform various assignments including teaching Sunday School from time to time. My husband and I were introduced to the church through the Westminster preschool which our three children attended. From day one, the Westminster community has been very open, caring and welcoming to us. We have built lasting relationships with the members of the congregation and we have become part of its big church family. Our kids love going to Kids For Christ on Sunday afternoons with the Youth Directors, Clark and Karen Lampard. They have also been active in theater productions through the Vanguard theater, also located at the church. For fun, I enjoy cheering at our kidsí soccer games and swim meets as well as sailing and fishing with family and friends.
I am a deacon at Westminster and truly enjoy serving. Part of my service is to set up communion, prepare for the service, and clean up after. I also enjoy meeting first time visitors and helping them discover the kindness of our congregation. Another part of being a deacon I enjoy is praying over our shawl ministries gorgeous handmade shawls that are given to members that will benefit by being wrapped in prayers, love, and warmth.
I came to Westminster 16 years ago with my family through the preschool. My husband and daughters were baptized here and our whole family has been participating in Vanguard productions for our entire time at the church. I have also served the church as an elder.
I was born in northern Minnesota and raised in the Lutheran Church (my Father's side) and the Presbyterian Church (my Mother's side). When I was 14 we moved to Corona CA and went to the First Congregational Church which was the most like what we were accustomed to. I have two sons and three grandsons. I was always a stay at home Mom. Mikel Taxer married Don and me on June 11, 1995. We both had gone away from attending church and felt we wanted it back in our lives. We joined Westminster because we like the small, friendly, family feeling that is here. This is my first time as a deacon and I am looking forward to learning and doing what I can.
I grew up in New Mexico and went to school in Washington state for a degree in Religion and East Asian Studies. A few years later I found my way to San Diego to take a job as a Wildland Firefighter. Fortunately I also found my wife here and I we were married at Westminster in 2011. Together we enjoy traveling and making our own adventures, including hiking and seeing new places. I enjoy hunting, fishing, and pretty much anything that keeps me outdoors.
As a Deacon I hope to serve the congregation and community as an instrument of God's love and faithfulness. I am honored to serve the church in this role, and pray for strength to meet the demands of this position.
